Chapter Fifteen

Being thrown into a dark, cold cell is a relief. My legs and arms, feet and hands, everything is ready to fall off. We’ve been walking for days, fed only a portion of rations each day, and now that we’re alone, I let the tears fall. The Creator must have forgotten about us, and we failed his first task.

As soon as I saw the snow on the mountains, I knew where they were taking us. The soldiers marched us all the way to the Frostlands, but no one uses that name here. It is aptly named The Forgotten. The atmosphere is heavy with death and smells of smoke and bile. Except down here. Down here, is smells like stale urine and fear.

Unfortunately, the soldiers were smart enough to not put Kevin and me in the same cell. His door clatters into place across the hall from me. I turn my head to peer across the stone floor and find Kevin looking at me, too. We’re so tired, but my body heat is draining to the ground. I get up and find a stiff, coarse blanket in the corner underneath a slim, barred window that allows a little bit of grey light through. My stomach is busy trying to eat itself, and I can ignore that except for when it pinches. I wrap my arms around myself and lower my chin to my chest.

I don’t know what to do or who to turn to.

“I'm sorry I let you down, Alex,” Kevin says softly.

Shivering, I rise and walk to the cell bars. Kevin sits in the center of his cell with his elbows on his knees. He stares at the chipped stone wall where a spider crawls back into its home between the cracks. Every once in a while, his body shakes, but he makes no move to warm himself.

I grab onto one of the cold bars. “Kev.” I haven’t used the shortened version of his name since we were kids. It’s a foreign and familiar sound, but it feels good, like coming home after a long journey.

He lifts his head and looks at me. “I'm really sorry I didn't kiss you when I had the chance.” He scratches the back of his neck. “If you would like that, I mean.” He sighs, hugs his knees, and turns to face the opposite wall. “Geez, why can’t I get this right? And I'm sorry I never told you.”

Deep, thick sadness settles into my bones, but it doesn’t completely mask the tingles that run across my lips. He’s finally talking to me about what’s going on between us. For once, I don’t know what to say.

“I knew the Creator wanted me to tell you as soon as he mentioned it would be just us together for this.” Kevin doesn’t finish his sentence. He doesn’t have to. Water drips somewhere, and my throat dries with longing to drink it. About a day has passed since we last had water.

My grip tightens on the cold metal.
